Laying a booked vein down a Corian waterfall

A waterfall island is a vertical argument. If the mineral streak dies at the front arris, the drop looks like a second product bolted on for the photograph. You choose a direction, you choose a meeting line, and you accept that a few millimetres of the most beautiful streak may be sacrificed to a mitre so the eye can keep moving. If the fabricator offers to use a similar sheet for the ends, the island will photograph as two materials. Glass rooms make the failure obvious. Daylight hits the vertical face and the horizontal face at different angles; a mismatch in both pattern and sheen becomes a stripe.

Matt solids hide the problem better than a high-contrast vein, which is why dramatic colourways need more drawing, not less. Mark the hero vein on both the deck and the drop. Stand at the doorway you actually use, not at a photographer's wide lens, when you approve the map. If the vein is meant to wrap two ends, budget two matched lengths, not one leftover offcut from a quieter job.

Photograph the sheet with the island still a paper outline

The map is a photograph or a tracing of the actual sheet with the island outline laid over it. Hobs, sinks and overhangs are drawn as interruptions. Clients who skip this step are the ones who later ask why the strongest streak dies under a chopping board. Share the map in daylight and again as a night thought if the kitchen is a glass box that lives on reflections. A vein that looks calm in a warehouse can become a lightning bolt against a dark garden. Specify whether the vein should run with the long axis of the room or across it as a counter-stripe. A mitre that carries pattern as well as load

A waterfall mitre is a long glue joint. The adhesive must match the quieter field of the sheet, not the brightest streak, or the mitre becomes a second vein. Clamping has to be even along the whole drop or the face will dish and catch gallery lighting. Sanding then has to honour the plane of the vertical, which is harder than sanding a deck because gravity and access both argue with you.

Radius edges complicate booking. A large soft radius at the front will eat a surprising amount of the pattern as it turns. A sharp arris keeps more of the streak but can feel severe in a domestic room. Statement Corian can take either; it cannot take a radius decided after the map is signed off. Ask for a dry-laid photograph of the mitre in the workshop before the paste goes on. Keep sockets and USB charges off the booked face; a cut-out in the drop wrecks the drawing.

Refuse two unmatched sheets on a single island

Refuse a mix of batches. Refuse a waterfall cut from a quieter remnant while the deck takes the drama. Refuse a close-enough vein that only matches at one corner. International catalogue looks still have to survive a British wet kitchen: steam, wine, a wet-room floor nearby. The pattern has to be honest at breakfast as well as in a dusk photograph.

Once the booked island is fitted, do not park the hob on the hero streak unless the map already allowed it. The waterfall is only worth the engineering if the story you booked is the story you still have after the first dinner.
